The St. Louis Cardinals sign 32-year-old outfielder Corey Dickerson to a one-year contract worth $5 million, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch reports. Dickerson is the third signing the Cardinals have made since the lockout ended.
The Cardinals will be the seventh team that Dickerson has played for in his career. Most recently he was a member of the Miami Marlins before being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2021.
Dickerson is known as being a left-handed batter who is better when facing a right-handed pitcher. Facing righties is something the Cardinals struggled with during 2021. Using the ESPN batting splits for the Cardinals one can see they were much worse against righties than lefties a season ago.
For his career, Dickerson is slashing .283/.327/.488 with 128 home runs. He has mostly been used as a fourth outfielder but he could find himself being the everyday designated hitter in St. Louis. One of his best statistics is an above-average strikeout rate that shows his solid discipline at the plate. Look for Dickerson to fill in a role as a veteran role-player.
